The works will be performed by organist Stephen Rumpf and Artistic Director of Concerts on the Slope, cellist Benjamin Larsen. Concerts on the Slope performances are open to the public and no tickets are required a free will donation is suggested. This is the final concert featuring the work of Robert Sirota.
Composed in 1993, Easter Canticles was commissioned by cellist Norman Fischer and received its premiere that year at Yale's Dwight Chapel performed by Robert Sirota's wife, organist Victoria Sirota, and Fischer. The music is designed as a triptych after an iconostasis of the Orthodox Church. The three panels are meditations on scenes from the Passion of Jesus Christ: his prayerful agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, his crucifixion, and resurrection. The Crucifixion movement incorporates the brutality of the hammering of the nails into Christ's hands. The conclusion of Resurrection evokes the image of Christ's hovering presence.
Over four decades, composer Robert Sirota has developed a distinctive voice, clearly discernable in all of his work - whether symphonic, choral, stage, or chamber music. The New York Times has described his style as, "fashioned with the clean, angular melodies, tart harmonies, lively syncopations and punchy accents of American Neo-Classicism," and writes, "Thick, astringent chromatic harmonies come in tightly bound chords to create nervous sonorities. Yet the textures are always lucid details come through."
