For more than 40 years, San Francisco's Kronos Quartet-David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola), and Sunny Yang (cello)-has combined a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually re-imagining the string quartet experience. In the process, Kronos has become one of the world's most celebrated and influential ensembles, performing thousands of concerts worldwide, releasing more than 50 recordings, collaborating with many of the world's most eclectic composers and performers, and commissioning more than 850 works and arrangements for string quartet.
Grammy winner, Kronos Quartet returns to the Cabrillo Festival for In the Blue Room, an intimate concert of works that includes a tribute to composer Terry Riley in celebration of his 80th birthday year! They'll perform Good Medicine from Riley's epic Salome Dances for Peace, and a new work written by Polish composer Aleksander Ko?ciow, a piece is based on a traditional Polish folk dance, the oberek. A musical gift to Riley, it represents, in the words of the composer, "the human need for pure joy."
The evening also includes a work written for Kronos by Cabrillo composer-in-residence Nathaniel Stookey, and works by Mark Applebaum, Laurie Anderson, and Mary Kouyoumdjian. Anticipate another memorable experience with these great pioneers of the genre!
