SAFEhouse for the Arts presents Everything All At Once and Mid to West Dance Collective in an evening of contemporary dance that explores chaos and composition through electrifying movement and affecting storytelling.
Part of the Eighth Summer Performance Festival (SPF8), these two East Bay dance companies will present new and in-progress work by local choreographers Peiling Kao and Jessi Barber.
Everything All At Once (EAAO) premieres a section of an in-progress evening set to premiere in 2016. "II. Liminal" follows four dancers as they wander the borderlands of change. Suspended in the in-between and facing the threshold of a shifting world, emotional vignettes examine their personal relationship with chaos. Drawing from the academic and mythic conceptions of liminality, the piece is underpinned by the fear and nihilism that can creep into the experience of living with a shifting climate, escalating violence, and the Janus-faced power of the internet. With a sound score by composer Casey Van Portfleet that features found sound, and original composition.
Under the artistic direction of choreographer Jessi Barber, EAAO incorporates text, myth, and popular culture into contemporary dance, rejecting post-modernism in favor of accessible image making and story telling. www.eaaodance.org
Mid to West Dance Collective, Sarah Chenoweth, Rebecca Chun, and Mo Minor, perform "A Fizzy Drink, A Metro Walk" by choreographer Peiling Kao. With sound design by Arjun Mendiratta, "A Fizzy Drink..." reflects and explores the secret of numbers that manipulate and systematize the choreographic process.
Mid to West Dance Collective is a collective of artists who completed the MFA program at the University of Iowa and are now making and producing work in the San Francisco Bay Area. www.midtowestdance.com
Peiling Kao is an award-winning Taiwanese choreographer, dancer, and teacher. www.peilingkaodances.com
