Recently relocated to the San Francisco Bay area after a distinguished career in New York City, RISA JAROSLOW & DANCERS today announced its first San Francisco season, co-presented by ODC Theater. The program features the West Coast premiere of Resist/Surrender (2006), Jaroslow's acclaimed work exploring the meaning of maleness in our culture and its connection to our collective ambivalence about power and control. The score by new music icon Scott Johnson will be played live by the Paul Dresher Ensemble. Jaroslow will also present Four Dialogues: A Solo, a world premiere created and performed by her and based on four catalytic ideas from Bay Area choreographers Laura Arrington, Christian Burns, Katie Faulkner and Keith Hennessy.
In this West Coast premiere of Resist/Surrender, choreographer Risa Jaroslow peels back the veneer of our culture's assumptions about maleness exposing an explosive physicality. The piece asks what masculinity could mean if we reconciled our attraction to and repulsion from the assumed power of maleness. The cast includes four dancers and ten men who are not trained dancers.
Scott Johnson's score for Resist/Surrender is based on recorded interviews with New York City firefighters, corporate lawyers, gay teens and senior adults, and counselors to men who batter, as well as an-all male poker game. Johnson took excerpts of the interviews, analyzed the pitch and rhythm of the voices, and transformed them into instrumentation. He then layered the original spoken text back into the composition. The result is an intriguing, complex composition that joins the classical tradition with a driving rock sensibility. The Paul Dresher Ensemble will perform Johnson's score live.
Set designer Perry Gunther has built a 24-foot long, 8-foot high cedar wall that the performers move against and over. By both supporting and impeding movement, it becomes a metaphor for the many barriers we meet with either resistance or surrender.
