Sustainable Ballard has a lot planned for its annual festival this September 19th. Combining creativity, passion and community, this group of Ballard neighbors always "brings it" to produce an exceptional event full of quirky mischief and old-fashioned fun. Attendees will also learn daily practices and big steps toward more sustainable living. This year's festival is sporting a garden party theme featuring a Taste of Ballard Tea Garden with delicious treats and an "Alice in Wonderland" atmosphere.
As always, the fest is FREE to the public and is perfect for families. There will be creation stations for bubblewands, musical instruments and birdhouses, skateboard lessons in the skatebowl, an urban farm animal area, and a plethora of games and prizes. At 2 pm, there will be a bike and pet parade as part of a new collaboration with Seattle Summer Parkways, which includes activities in six other parks in the neighborhood. The fest also features local food carts and live music on a solar-powered stage. Vendors also get in on the act, offering sustainability support and education with a multitude of ideas for living a greener life. Festival sponsor Built Green, for example, will be demonstrating green remodeling and home refit strategies.
With a membership of 1,500, Sustainable Ballard demonstrates that energy independence and self-reliance does not mean "going it alone." At the Sustainable Ballard Festival, attendees are participants and co-creators of the festival experience, and everyone in the community is welcome. While the mood is festive, the message is a serious one - it's all aimed at engaging Ballard neighbors to discover new possibilities and deepen their commitment to living more lightly on the Earth. The choices we make daily can affect global climate change.
