Umusuna-Memories Before History (2012)
Umusuna is an ambitious and breathtaking vision of the creation of the Earth that shifts giddily from balance to imbalance, as the surface of the stage itself is upset amid towering cascades of sand and bodies that hint at the movement of the cosmos. Not seen in San Francisco since 2010, Sankai Juku will leave you with the feeling that, like a child, you have seen the world for the first time.
"Sankai Juku dramatically displace our normal readings of body language and create bizarre, wonderful images"- The Guardian. Sankai Juku was founded by Ushio Amagatsu in 1975 and by 1980 Sankai Juku was invited to perform in Europe for the first time. Sankai Juku went to Nancy International Festival in France with the firm conviction that Butoh would be accepted. The performance was such a sensation and that the Avignon Festival invited them to perform that year as well. For the next four years, the company remained in Europe and performed in various international festival including Edinburgh International Festival, Spain Madrid International Festival and International Cervantino Festival.
Ushio Amagatsu also works independently outside Sankai Juku. In 1988 he created "Fushi" on the invitation of Jacob's Pillow Foundation, in the U.S., with music by Philip Glass. In 1989, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Spiral Hall in Tokyo where he directed "Apocalypse" (1989), and "Fifth-V" (1990). In February 1997, he directed "Bluebeard's Castle" by Bartok conducted by Peter Eotvos at Tokyo International Forum. In March 2008, Amagatsu directed "Lady Sarashina," Peter EOTVOS's new opera at Opera National de Lyon (world premiere). "Lady Sarashina" again received "Prix du Syndicat National de la Critique, France" and it was seen in Opera Comique in February 2009 and in Teatr Wielki, Polish National Opera, in Warsaw in April 2013.
