Info:
Genre-crossing singer-songwriter Luciana Souza and jazz pianist-composer Edward Simon will headline San Francisco Performances' 36th Season Gala, the organization's most important fundraising event for its education and outreach programs. The event, which takes place October 16 in The Julia Morgan Ballroom at the Merchants Exchange Building in San Francisco, is also a celebration of the opening of SF Performances' 2015-16 Season which marks the return of the organization to the newly renovated Herbst Theatre.
Co-chairs for the event are Natalie Wade and Thomas Beischer. Black tie is optional and valet parking will be provided for guests. Individual tickets for the evening start at $400 and table sponsorships begin at $4,000.
Grammy winner Luciana Souza is one of Jazz's leading singers and interpreters. Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in the late sixties, she grew up in a family of Bossa Nova innovators. Luciana's work as a performer transcends traditional boundaries around musical styles, offering solid roots in jazz, sophisticated lineage in world music, and an enlightened approach to new music.
Edward Simon grew up in the small coastal town of Cardon, Venezuela, where he was surrounded by the sounds of Latin and Caribbean music. Upon arriving on the New York jazz scene in 1989, his reputation as a pensive, rhythmically astute, versatile player caught the ear of noted musicians Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Mann, Kevin Eubanks and Paquito D'Rivera, all of who would later employ him. Simon is a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship Awardee and leader of the Edward Simon Trio.
Gala guests will enjoy a cocktail reception at six o'clock followed by dinner, a fund-a-need drive and the concert with Luciana and Edward. Proceeds from the Gala directly support San Francisco Performances' arts education programs, which bring the joy of music and dance to thousands of Bay Area individuals each year.
