Info:
San Francisco Performances officially returns to its home base-the beautiful Beaux-Arts style Herbst Theatre-after a two-year absence, with a two-pianos/four-hands program in a rare and spectacular pairing of commanding performers. Thomas Ades is equally celebrated as a composer and pianist, "one of the most imposing figures in contemporary music" (The New Yorker). Gloria Cheng electrifies audiences with emotional intensity, playing "as if her life depended on it" (The New Yorker).
London-born composer and pianist, Thomas Ades is considered, "as one of the most vibrant, original and technically dazzling musical voices of our day." (San Francisco Chronicle). His well-known compositions include two operas, Powder Her Face (Cheltenham Festival/Almeida Theatre, London, 1995), and The Tempest (Royal Opera, Covent Garden, 2004). Other orchestral works include Asyla (CBSO, 1997), Tevot (Berlin Philharmonic and Carnegie Hall, 2007), Polaris (New World Symphony, Miami 2011), Violin Concerto Concentric Paths (Berliner Festspiele and London Proms, 2005), In Seven Days (Piano concerto with moving image - LA Philharmonic and RFH London 2008), and Totentanz for mezzo-soprano, baritone and orchestra (London Proms, 2013).
Pianist Gloria Cheng is acclaimed as a discerning artist whose performances tap the emotional core of contemporary music. In recitals that explore significant interconnections amongst composers, Cheng has been presented by the Ojai Festival, Chicago Humanities Festival, William Kapell Festival, and the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music. She has appeared on leading concert series including Carnegie Hall's Making Music, Cal Performances, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Engine408, Stanford Lively Arts, and at (le) Poisson Rouge.
The full program will include:
