October 6th - October 31st, Opening reception October 17, 4-6pm
In the group exhibition titled "Departure", Sandra Lee Gallery is proud to present and celebrate recent MFA Graduate artists David Tim, Joshua Young Lee, and Anna Garski of the San Francisco Arts Institute, and Chelsea Hill and Steve Froman of the California College of the arts.
David Tim's woodcut pieces highlight both the social and cultural realities that are found within a community. The scope of his own cultural perception, having been shaped by his own sense of place and diverse origin, likewise shifts how the work itself is viewed. Additionally, it generates a sense of both time and uniqueness. Joshua Young Lee focuses on the mundane. His work not only places emphasis on the banality of the everyday, but also documents the integral part it plays as well. Overlooked moments become familiar, which in turn makes them equally emotional and accessible. Anna Garski's painting and performance pieces reflect the artists' confronting relationships between mind and body, femininity and masculinity, and artist and model. The work in itself is an admission of vulnerability, but is likewise a physical manifestation of personal fear and desire.
Chelsea Hill creates imagery that pokes at human nature and negates the societal constructs that have been brought on by Western culture. Hill depicts Madness as a strength, and likewise appropriates tropes from art history as well as trash television to convey a message of both contradiction and rebellion. Finally, Steven Froman's skylight video pieces takes the conventional, and literally flips it into something extraordinary. Earlier in life, form had followed function. Having a long background in creating the practical, Froman generated a more fine approach to everyday material. As stated by the artist, there is a creation of a juxtaposition of ordinary objects and higher form.
