San Francisco Trolley Dances is an annual, admission-free festival that has been dubbed "art for citizens" and "a gift to the City" by past attendees. There are six two-hour tours on each of the two days. This year's event begins in the Mission Bay neighborhood. After a series of performances here, attendees board Muni's T-Line to travel to a new set of performance sites in the Bayview neighborhood.
More than half a dozen site-specific performances are currently programmed including works by Bay Area choreographers Byb Chanel Bibene, director of Kiandanda Dance Alex Ketley, director of The Foundry Amy Seiwert, director of Imagery Valerie Gnassounou-Bynoe, director of Yameci Dance Company Heather Baer, director of Cielo Vertical Arts and SFTD Artistic Director Kim Epifano. This year's event will also involve a partnership with ODC Theater. Zoe Bender and Sheena Johnson, two of the artists mentored in ODC's "Pilot 66" program this fall, will present new works for SFTD.
Each year Epifano matches artists and ensembles with specific sites, inviting them to create an 8- to 15-minute piece in response to the physical environment, architecture and history of the area. The starting point for this year's event is the Bay View Boat Club whose original structure dates back to the late 1930s.
At each site, trained volunteers greet audience members, while professional theater artists act as tour guides leading audiences along the performance journey. Attendees have the option to walk or bike to the performance sites on their own. Route maps will be available on site and online at epiphanydance.org.
