Visionary Dance Theatre opens our sixth season with our fall dance concert "Shades" at the Kwaisun Studio (8380 Center Drive, La Mesa, CA 91942) on October 16th-17th, 2015 @ 8pm.
VDT welcomes back guest choreographers Jeanne Travers, an internationally-acclaimed choreographer and Professor of Dance at University of South Florida. She will present her critically-acclaimed work "One Drop" about the drought crises in California and will make its San Diego premiere.
VDT additionally welcomes choreographer, performer, projection designer and arts educator Natalia Valerdi. She will stage her work "Garden5" on the VDT dancers. "Garden5" looks at how gender roles can encase our behavior unconsciously, to our own detriment, and the many paths to re-defining these roles in modern life. This work is a response to Hieronymus Bosch's "The Garden of Earthly Delights", exploring the tension between shame and forgiveness. Unpacking Bosch's symbolism brings this social struggle to the surface, progressing through a landscape of doubt, desire and freedom.
Artistic Director Spencer John Powell will re-stage his work "Freedom". Originally commissioned by Another Language Dance Company in 1993, this high energy work celebrates Powell's studies in the Katherine Dunham Technique (the matriarch and queen mother of black dance). Powell will also premiere a new work "Matthew 6:14-15". This solo work for Marty Dorado marks his departure from VDT.
Come join VDT as we display an evening of dance filled with thought, awareness, and celebration.
Tickets are $12/advance and $16/general. Advance sale window closes October 11, 2015.
