Million Dollar Question is a dance theater show in which modern dance explores itself. The night features four dance pieces set exclusively to spoken word, ranging from comedic - one piece, entitled Intermission, casts the dancers as theatergoers waiting in a never ending line for the bathroom - to personal and poignant - the titular piece explores the difficulty every artist faces trying to sum up their craft to a stranger.
"Dance and music are soulmates," says Catherine Liu, creator and choreographer of Million Dollar Question, "they go hand in hand. Most styles of dance are paired with like styles of music: hip hop dance with hip hop music, swing dance with swing jazz, ballet with classical, etc. Modern dance, however, is not defined by any music choice. It has no resident sounds and commonly collaborates with any sound in existence. In this show, I wanted to explore the collaboration between body movement and spoken word, and at times, movement and silence. Movement is rhythmic and musical. So is human speech. This show, like modern dance itself, is bound not by external counts or music, but by our internal human rhythms."
