On Sunday, December 6th, 3:00 PM at the Islamic Cultural Center in Oakland, California, the Mevlevi Order of America, led by Spiritual Director Makam Postneshin Jelaleddin Loras celebrates the mystical union of Rumi in his journey back to the Source, with the Whirling Dervish Ceremony. The beloved 13th century mystical poet and Sufi Master, Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi was the original whirling dervish. His day of leaving this world for the other is celebrated in December of each year through the ceremony created by his students after his death, and passed down through the hundreds of years to this day. Makam Postneshin Jelaleddin Loras brought this teaching to America from Turkey, over thirty years ago, and this traditional ceremony is presented by the students which he has taught and nurtured since his arrival from Konya, Turkey. Dr. Timucin Cevikoglu, Master Turkish Musician, will lead the MOA Orchestra accompanying the ceremony with authentic sacred Sufi music. This timeless ritual of the Whirling Dervishes has stirred the hearts of humanity with sacred beauty for over 700 years.
