RAWdance is proud to announce the return of Mine, an evening-length work of contemporary dance created by RAWdance Artistic Directors Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein. Inspired during time spent among the limitless stretches of fencing and barbed wire that partition much of the rural American West, Mine focuses inward, probing the human urge to possess, consume and control. Mine opens Thursday, December 3, 2015 at the Joe Goode Annex in San Francisco, and runs through Sunday, December 13.
"...deliciously unpredictable tour de force... everything about the fifty-minute work is utterly primal, to the point of animalistic. The very essence of human nature, instinct and emotion is under a honest microscope." -Heather Desaulniers, Critical Dance
Since its 2013 premiere, the company has been eagerly awaiting an opportunity to bring this celebrated piece back to the stage. An intimate work for five dancers, Mine draws the audience into a web of carnality. A rigged environment of suspended ropes and counterweights, configured by top-notch set designer Sean Riley, transforms the Annex. Dramatic lighting by Jim French, costumes by Mary Domenico, and a haunting original score composed by Joel St. Julien heighten the emotional stakes. Performances are limited to approximately 60 people per night for this "intricately structured, excellently performed essay on some of our less noble instincts." (SF Bay Guardian)
Performed by the original cast, Mine features dancers Kerry Demme, Aaron Perlstein and Laura Sharp, alongside Rein and Smith.
The development of Mine was made possible in part through generous support from The Zellerbach Family Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, with space support from the Joe Goode Annex. RAWdance is supported by Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund, and the Kenneth Rainin Foundation.
