Mbongui Square, an annual community festival organized by Kiandanda Dance Theater, is a gathering of dance, music, visual arts and spoken word artists of various styles from the Bay Area and around the world.
This festival, launched in 2012, came from the desire to reinforce the notion of community through the arts. What defines Mbongui Square is professional interdisciplinary arts plus multicultural community. Mbongui is a word that originated from the Congo that refers to togetherness. It refers to a place where family, neighbors, passers-by and foreigners come together to share meals, stories, and knowledge, and/or receive assistance from the community. It is a transformative place an inspiring place in which each person's story may represent a new direction, another way to keep breaking boundaries and connect people, and Mbongui Square does this in the way of the performing and visual arts all on one stage.
In Mbongui Square, we break from the formal performance setting and artists perform 10 minutes of a piece that they think is worth sharing with the world.
