The modern world has eliminated many sources of suffering. We seldom die from cholera or smallpox. In the developed world we die from the stressors: obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular disease. We drink, eat poorly, are often chronically sleep deprived. And we stress out. We stress over war, the economy, work, relationships, the past, and the future. We stress about our ability to tolerate stress! All this stress takes a toll on our bodies, but not just our bodies.
In this lecture, scientist and author Kelly G. Wilson will briefly introduce conditions that very clearly contribute to depression, anxiety, addiction, and many other forms of mental illness. He will introduce a program of small actions that every person, no matter how ill, no matter what circumstance, can hack their lives and improve physical and mental health. A steady program of harm reduction can make more abundant living possible. We may not be able to "fix" the world, but we can make ourselves, our children, friends, and clients stronger and more resilient. And, we do not need to wait a single moment to begin!
In this fast-paced and entertaining evening, he'll dive into subjects such as:
Difference is not a disorder Suffering is not a disorder Minimize your exposure to toxins (physical and social) Eat real food Move your body Give yourself more sleep/rest opportunities Engage in meaningful activity Practice mindfulness Cultivate your social network Cultivate self-compassion
