Sunset District residents Wendell Shinn and Lennell Allen combine to explore the world on opposite scales. Lennell's work draws you into the details as it also appreciates the beautiful results of happenstance interplay between light and object. Wendell, on the other hand, uses panoramic and circular imagery formats to tweak our perception of the large scale of urban architecture and the assumed perspective within a cityscape by distorting each in clever, subtly humorous ways.
"At the edge of the ocean at the edge of the day, color becomes an abstraction: I wait with camera and tripod. Slow exposures layer images of moving color on the digital screen to create a new final image. Whether I am capturing evening seascapes, or chasing drifting feathers on shallow ponds, or focusing ethereal reflections of sunlight through blue bottles, I seek images that suggest an object and an atmosphere." L. Allen
A UCSF specialist in microscopy, Lennell combines a career in scientific imaging with a lifetime love of fine art photography. Images from the Ocean series are now part of the permanent collection of the SFPUC building. Additionally, four have been selected by the SF Art Commission for display in the new SF General Hospital Trauma Center opening in March 2016.
"In my retirement I find my 'mid-life' crisis drawing me back to my early days of creating abstractions of dreamlike worlds inspired by the likes of Disney and Dali.", shares Wendell. "I've found renewed interest in the day-to-day things I notice but left unexplored until now and a trove of under estimated photos and a lifetime of inspirations from decades gone by: A song by Tom Waits, the life of birds and ravens, fairytale worlds of childhood dreams and Dreamscapes made of panoramas with bird's eye and worm's eye views." Wendell's work is held in many private and corporate collections, including multiple UCSF locations in San Francisco.
