Bay Choral Guild Presents Dutch Masters, a-cappella choral music by Dutch master composers from the 16th to the 20th century. Our program features the brilliant counterpoint of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Renaissance composer, organist, teacher, and renowned improviser. A master of complex rhythms, his musical influence and innovations, including that of the organ fugue, spread widely across Northern Europe and as far as England and Sweden. Our program includes Sweelinck's Psalm 150 - Or soit loue l'Eternel, a motet for double choir, as well as six motets that vary from simple four-part harmonies to 5- and 8-part sonorities.
The Romantic era is represented by Alphons Diepenbrock who employed lush Romantic-era harmonies in his Stabat Mater Dolorosa and by Anton Verheij whose polyphonic Salve Regina offers delightful chromaticism and frequent key changes.
Works by Hendrik Andriessen and Henk Badings bookend the Modern era. A noted teacher and choir director, H. Andriessen's interest in early music is apparent in his 1933 motet, Qui Habitat, which reflects the older 'Dutch' motet style. Composed in 1990, Sonnet #43 by Hendrik's son Jurriaan Andriessen is clearly of the modern, or even later era, exploring various vocal techniques, including humming and vocalizing on "ah" for extended periods.
