Barefoot Chamber Concerts ("an enterprise noted for both its quality and informality" - San Francisco Classical Voice) presents really good music in the right acoustic and without the formality of most classical music events. Their contributions to the Berkeley Festival are always keenly anticipated, and this year is no exception: they will present two noon concerts, one of stunning instrumental music by Christopher Simpson and Matthew Locke (Thursday June 9), and this one of Cries and In Nomines: Elizabethan gems for voices and viols. The Cries program was first heard at the 2016 Berkeley Festival, and popular demand brings its return to the stage of St. Mark's Parish Hall.
"The Cries of London" by Orlando Gibbons and "The Country Cries" by Richard Dering are the famous (and hilarious) pieces that anchor this program. Gibbons' piece rings with the sounds of street food sellers and merchants ("ripe damsons ripe/ hot puddings, hot / have ye any work for a cooper?" etc), while the Dering piece, largely in dialect, reflects a more rural discourse ("Her'll fling her pisspot on her head, for her play'd all night at whipperginnie").
The Gibbons "Cries" is also an "In Nomine", based on the plainsong that inspired dozens of instrumental pieces. The program will also include the original John Taverner mass movement, an In Nomine by Christopher Tye based on street cries, another (instrumental) In Nomine by Gibbons and a contemporary ballad about a scheming cookmaid, several tailors and a sausage.
