Barefoot Chamber Concerts ("an enterprise noted for both its quality and informality" - San Francisco Classical Voice) presents really good music in the right acoustic and without the formality of most classical music events. For this very special Berkeley Festival event, Barefoot's popular house band, Hallifax & Jeffrey (Peter Hallifax and Julie Jeffrey, viols) are joined by guests Andrew Canepa, organ, and Adaiha MacAdam-Somer, viol, in "Seasons, Monthes, Fancies and Dances by Christopher Simpson and Matthew Locke".
In the mid 17th century, English music went underground. The puritans were in charge, there was no more royal patronage (the king had been executed) or employment in church (the church organs had been destroyed). Such musicians as remained in the country (most went abroad) were supported by private, mostly catholic families. Christopher Simpson, and Matthew Locke, two virtuoso viol players and composers, represent the finest of that "lost" generation of musicians.
Yet even in difficult circumstances, they produced stunning chamber music for viols. Simpson's four suites for each of the seasons (80 years before Vivaldi's better known set) and his twelve "Monthes", exquisite one-movement miniatures, are a fabulous challenge for the treble and two bass viols and organ continuo they were written for. Matthew Locke's fantasies and dances from his gorgeous three-part "Little Consort" and musically inventive "Flatt Consort" are completely different, and contrast splendidly with the Simpson.
In the lovely wooden acoustic of St. Mark's Parish Hall, this concert will be unmissable.
