Alameda, CA The Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda will host the Summer Sailstice on June 18th, as a part of an international celebration of sailing on the Saturday closest to the summer solstice.
This all-day, free event is open to both the sailing community and the public and will include a showing of the America's Cup, a helicopter demonstration by the Coast Guard Search and Rescue Team, free sailing tours for families, youth sailing races, a cardboard boat-building competition and a full schedule of educational seminars, along with live entertainment, food and beverages served all day.
The most coveted trophy in all of sailing, The America's Cup, will be on display at the yacht club, and the America's Cup spokesperson Tucker Thompson, an EYC member, will give an exclusive talk about what goes on behind the scenes of sailing's biggest tournament. This is a truly once-in-a-lifetime chance to get up close to the highest prize in all of sailing.
"There are thousands of sailboats in the Bay Area. This is the one event offering the opportunity for everyone to sail, race, cruise and enjoy being part of a global celebration of sailing," said event Alameda event coordinator Bill Nork.
At the global level, the Summer Sailstice teams up with Sailors for the Sea, a nonprofit organization that educates and empowers the sailing community to protect and restore ocean and coastal waters.
In 2015, sailors from all 50 U.S. states and more than 40 countries participated in everything from offshore ocean races, social sails on lakes, family picnics aboard a rowboat, to philanthropic events that took disabled children out on the water.
The world-wide event also includes a crowd-sourced event registry for those who can't make the event in Alameda. People from all over the world are planning day sails, picnics and all sorts of nautical activities all over the Bay Area and around the world!
