La Vie: Introducing the work of French artist Claude Roux at Sculpturesite Gallery
Sculpturesite Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition CLAUDE ROUX: La Vie, on view from May 22 to July 9, 2016, located on the historic grounds of Jack London Square in Glen Ellen. This is Roux's first exhibition in the US.
Claude Roux is foremost a creator of sculptures and drawings, but she is also an author of complex human characters who live full lives. Her depiction of men, women and children, nude or clothed, is profoundly humanist. There is no judgement, no admonition. Roux has no patience for trendy, unrealistically slim figures. Her "people" are of the earth, undeniably alive and formed by tangible life experiences that we can each personally recognize, or project as we please. They are strong, vulnerable, imperfect, playful, serious, contemplative.
The rich textural qualities of the stoneware Roux favors add depth, both visually and conceptually. Roux's refusal to smooth and polish the surfaces, her delight in leaving details out and the striking juxtaposition of contrasting clay bodies, all lead the viewer to experiencing a primal familiarity with her works, a recognition. Roux's works ultimately give us permission to be ourselves.
When she was a child, Claude Roux was fascinated by old people she would meet, wanting to touch their large ears, which she found beautiful. As an artist, she has created her own "beautiful".
Claude Roux has always loved to draw and she discovered clay in high school. She studied art history in Toulouse. She worked in graphic design and fashion photography. Her artistic career developed full time after she moved to Peyriac-de-Mer, a small village bordering a lovely lagoon in the Southwest of France. She continues to sculpt and draw and shows her work in various galleries, chapels and chateaux in France.
