Reception Friday, Sept 2, 6-9pm, Exhibition August 12-September 19
The Fourth Wall Gallery in Oakland is featuring artist Carrie Ann Plank beginning August 12th, and running through September 17th. Plank works in printmaking, painting, and glass. She combines new technologies with the tradition of printmaking. This intersection adds perspective to printmaking through the contrasts of old and new, anarchistic and orderly.
Plank's series at Fourth Wall is titled Strata. It plays with taking recognizable objects, distilling them to their most base structure, abstracting them, de-contextualizing them, and then subsequently placing them in new contexts. This produces a conflict in the viewer as a discomforting familiarity.
Plank has received national and international acclaim, having permanent collections in the Fine Art Archives of the Library of Congress, Fine Art Museums of San Francisco, the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, the Guanlan Print Art Museum in China, and the Iraq National Library in Baghdad. Plank is the Director of the Printmaking MFA & BFA Programs at the Academy of Art University.
