Canessa Gallery celebrates its 50th anniversary with a fundraiser and exhibition featuring work donated by some of the many artists who have shown here. A silent auction of the artworks will be held during the opening reception on September 9, with a minimum bid of $100 and an outright purchase price of $200 per artwork. Wine and appetizers will be served. Admission is open to all, with a suggested donation of $20.
Housed in a landmark building in North Beach, Canessa Gallery has been at the center of San Francisco's rich artistic, literary, and cultural life since opening its doors in 1966. As a nonprofit neighborhood gallery, its mission has always been to support and showcase the work of dedicated artists. To date, more than six hundred new, emerging, and established sculptors, painters, photographers, and performance and literary artists have presented their work at Canessa Gallery.
The gallery is located in the landmark Canessa Printing Company building, a diminutive old-brick gem that is one of downtown San Francisco's last links with her colorful bohemian past. While many of the original buildings in the area did not survive era of high-and-higher architecture, the historic Canessa Building has-and it continues to glow with the light, life, and magic of artists at work.
Come help us honor Canessa Gallery and its long history in San Francisco and its contribution to West Coast art. All artwork will remain hanging until the closing party on September 30, when unsold work will be available for purchase. All proceeds from this anniversary exhibition will go toward the continuation of the gallery.
