Info:
Celebrate KALW's 75th anniversary at a very special night with performances by Kronos Quartet and Bruce Cockburn.
KALW went on the air in 1941 as San Francisco's first FM radio station, and the first non-commercial FM West of the Mississippi. This evening will be a celebration of music and creativity at KALW - and the artistic communities that the station amplifies and collaborates with.
Music and the arts are integral to KALW's creative ethos. The station hosts a dozen locally-produced music programs ranging from folk and blues to world music and the avant-garde. For more than twenty years, the station has produced Open Air, the Bay Area's only weekly broadcast performing arts magazine. And in 2015, KALW launched Sights & Sounds, a weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists.
Kronos Quartet - David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola), and Sunny Yang (cello) - has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually re-imagining the string quartet experience. One of the most celebrated and influential groups of our time, Kronos has collaborated with many of the world's most accomplished composers and performers, and commissioned more than 850 works and arrangements for string quartet.
Bruce Cockburn has enjoyed an illustrious career shaped by politics, spirituality, and musical diversity. His remarkable journey has seen him embrace folk, jazz, rock, and worldbeat styles while traveling to such far-flung places as Guatemala, Mali, Mozambique, and Nepal. "My job," he explains, "is to try and trap the spirit of things in the scratches of pen on paper and the pulling of notes out of metal."
