August 6-7 and August 13-14 (9:45 A.M. - 3:30 P.M.)
The Pacifica Historical Society invites you to take a fun informative tour of a beloved Pacifica landmark. In the historic Sharp Park District, a hillside castle overlooks the Pacific Ocean that is an enigma for many. The legendary Castle was built in 1908 as an earthquake-proof home for the family of Henry McCloskey, a lawyer for the Ocean Shore Railroad and grandfather to former congressman Pete McCloskey. The castle's last owner (and namesake) Sam Mazza, a successful painting contractor with an artistic eye and a fun-loving personality, refurbished the castle in an opulent, whimsical style, filling many rooms with eye-catching antiques and collectibles.
Although Sam's Castle is usually closed to the public, during two weekends a year the Pacifica Historical Society is allowed to use the castle to help raise funds for our projects. In 2016 the dates of our Castle Tours will be on the weekends of August 6 & 7 and 13 & 14.
The visit to the castle includes the chance to tour the castle at your own pace and to meet several resident "ghosts", costumed members of our society who are eager to share the castle's history with visitors. Tickets are $25 for adults ($10 for children) with all proceeds going to the Pacifica Historical Society. Currently our major projects include the Coastside Museum located nearby in the newly renovated historic Little Brown Church and restoration of the only remaining car from the Ocean Shore Railroad, which a hundred years ago ran along the rugged coast.
Groups have come as far as Sacramento for these Castle Tours and several have combined the outing with a meal at one of Pacifica's many good restaurants and a chance to experience our city's scenic location. We have prepared information packets to assist in your planning. For more information call (650) 359-5462 or go to www.Pacificahistory.org. We guarantee your group will have a great time at our Castle Tour.
