Oakland's distinguished Dimensions Dance Theater, among the oldest African American dance companies on the West Coast, presents Project Panther, for one night only, on Saturday October 15, at 8 pm in the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, Oakland.
Project Panther revisits the history of the revolutionary, contentious, influential and often misunderstood Black Panther Party, which was founded in Oakland in 1966 in response to widespread police brutality in African American communities across the country. The work, with new choreography and text by Artistic Director Deborah Vaughan, is a continuation of the company's first Project Panther performance in 1996, and features an original jazz score by Oakland pianist Glen Pearson, performed live by a quartet.
The work explores the Panthers' activities as noble agents of social change, portraying the party's civic and humanitarian work in black communities, such as its very successful Free Breakfast for Schoolchildren program and the People's Free Medical Centers health clinics. It asks audiences to consider the values of discipline, inclusivity, intellectual rigor, pride and self-determination that were pillars of the Panther movement.
Dimensions Dance Theater (DDT) is a dance company and school founded in Oakland in 1972 with the mission to create, perform, and teach dance that reflects the lives and historical experiences of the African Diaspora. Under the continuing leadership of co-founder and artistic director Deborah Vaughan, the company has served as a beacon of creativity and a model of artistic excellence for low-income, inner city, urban communities with little access to the arts. DDT is widely recognized for its outstanding presentation of both traditional African dances and contemporary choreography drawn from African, jazz, and modern dance idioms.
