Clerestory begins its eleventh season with Ye Sacred Muses: Choral Music from the Chapel Royal. The Chapel Royal was for centuries the seat of British sacred music-making, and the 9-man ensemble will sing lesser-known a cappella works by composers and organists of the Chapel Royal Henry Purcell, William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, and others. The Chapel Royal - more an institution that followed the British monarchy than a specific place - began well before the time of Henry VIII and reached its peak during the reign of Elizabeth I. We will also highlight the madrigal compilation, The Triumphs of Oriana - a tribute to Queen Elizabeth I - and its 20th-century companion, A Garland for the Queen, which commemorates the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II with contributions by Vaughan Williams, Finzi, Tippett and others. These modern 'madrigals' retain rhythmic and textual clarity of their centuries-older counterparts, while embracing the harmonic adventurousness and grander forms of England in the 20th Century. With this far-ranging and emotionally rich program, Clerestory is eager to return to the cathedral roots and illuminated harmonies that inspired its name!
