The CONCEPT series is back with another dose of unique, high quality dance art, presented with a casual, living room vibe. Six Bay Area dance artists/companies share what they have brewing in this celebrated pay-what-you-can event. After a successful shift of location this past Spring, the CONCEPT series returns to the lavish Green Room in the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center- one of the most beautiful rooms in the city.
Since 2007, the biannual CONCEPT series has regularly offered up one of the best samplings of professional Bay Area dance in a casual, approachable atmosphere. SF Weekly has described the series as "a rare bird hiding in San Francisco's cultural aviary. ...[W]atching dance in such a climate changes your perception of the art." Dance writer Heather Desaulniers calls the series "an appetizer menu for modern dance a fun, casual and intimate program featuring an assortment of San Francisco contemporary performance."
The CONCEPT series is all about bringing the underground arts scene to an above ground salon. Choreographers are encouraged to share work at any point along the creation process, from revisiting repertory to testing out material fresh from the studio. RAWdance's Artistic Directors Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein play host, dishing up popcorn and coffee between pieces.
For the CONCEPT series: 19, RAWdance will share studies for a new piece inspired by the work of visual artist Louise Bourgeois and the literary memoir "Brain on Fire", a story of a New York Post journalist's experience with a rare autoimmune disease. Smith and Rein will also reimagine excerpts from their 2015 work Through my fingers to the deep, commissioned by the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. The CONCEPT series always includes emerging to well-established guest artists from all corners of the Bay. This year, RAWdance will be joined by Victor Talledos, Julie-Ann Gambino, James Graham Dance Theatre, Sharp & Fine, and 13th Floor.
