SoMa Now and Then presents one man's journey through San Francisco South of Market's back alleys and secret rooms, as the neighborhood's queer culture shifts from the heyday of leathermen into today's tech boom. Through choreographed movement and personal anecdote, artist Joe Landini leads audiences on a walking tour of the neighborhood, beginning at SF Eagle at the corner of 12th and Harrison Streets, and finishing at Blow Buddies several blocks away. SoMa Now and Then was conceived and directed by P.U.S.H. Founding Artistic Director Amy Lewis.
SoMa Now and Then coincides with preliminary plans by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to designate part of the city's South of Market neighborhood as an "LGBTQ Social Heritage Special Use District" centered along Folsom Street from 12th to 3rd Streets. The discussion about how to preserve the area's history as a bastion of San Francisco's leather community comes at a time when many historic gay nightlife venues have closed.
"Over the last decade South of Market has proven to be especially vulnerable to the city's rapid development," said Landini. "SoMa Now and Then is an effort to honor the neighborhood's history as an important center for queer life in the region. I offer up my own life story and experiences as an example of the way SoMa has shaped and supported a community for more than 50 years."
All tours will be limited to 25 individuals. The performance contains candid language and imagery meant to be observed by mature audiences.
