Info:
The Grammy Award-winning San Francisco Girls Chorus will be joined by mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin and members of the Magik*Magik Orchestra for its season opening concert featuring music about the many aspects of Love. Love's Journey will be given one performance only Saturday, October 29, at 8 pm at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. Girls Chorus Artistic Director Lisa Bielawa has created the program, which will be conducted by Girls Chorus Music Director Valerie Sainte-Agathe featuring an original work by Laurie Rubin and Jennifer Taira, Holst's Seven Part Songs, Janacek's "The Wolf's Trail", John Zorn's "Colombina", Milhaud's "Devant sa Main Nue" and other works by Debussy and Chausson.
"Being in the presence of an artist of mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin's caliber is always inspiring for those sharing the stage with her and those watching," says Lisa Bielawa. "Her magical rapport, especially with young people, stems from her work as one of the founders of Hawaii's largest performing arts festival and school for youth, Ohana Arts, but also from her own challenges as a blind artist in a field that has not had robust opportunities for the disabled. Laurie's courage and overwhelming success are helping blaze a new trail and define a whole new kind of empowered diva.
"The music we will hear on Oct 29 was chosen to celebrate the sound of Laurie's and the SFGC singers' voices in dialogue, interwoven, offsetting one another or blending together into a whole new sound. The subject matter returns time and time again to the un-lovely side of Love - often comical, sometimes poignant and sad, always full of compassion for the human condition and our incorrigible foibles around Love."
