Founded in 2005, the Galax Quartet-two violins, viola da gamba and 'cello-explores the realm where early music and Baroque instruments intersect with new music and living composers, in classical quartets, film scores, song cycles, jazz, and collaborations with poets and mad scientists.
From Berkeley to Hong Kong, contralto Karen Clark's performances of medieval to modern music have received high praise. In new music, Karen has premiered numerous chamber works by leading composers. The Los Angeles Times called Karen's premiere of Johnston's Parable, "stunning."
Elizabeth Blumenstock is a long-time concertmaster, soloist, and leader with the Bay Area's Philharmonia Baroque and American Bach Soloists, concertmaster of the International Handel Festival in Goettingen, Germany, and Artistic Director of the Corona del Mar Baroque Music Festival.
Baroque violinist David Wilson plays regularly with Ensemble Vermillian and Magnificat, and he is a founding member of Archetti, the Galax Quartet, and other ensembles. He teaches violin and chamber music and directs the orchestra at the San Francisco Early Music Society's annual Baroque Workshop.
Dubbed a "basso continuo wizard" by Gramophone (UK), David Morris has made a specialty of performing 17th- and 18th-c. music on a variety of historical bass instruments.
Composer and performer on the viola da gamba, Roy Whelden enjoys straddling the worlds of early and new music. He has been profiled as a composer and gambist on public radio. His recordings include the award-winning Shock of the Old and Galax: Music for viola da gamba (New Albion 059), as well as On Cold Mountain: Songs on Poems of Gary Snyder, a 2011 recording (on the Innova label) made by the Galax Quartet with contralto Karen Clark.
Their performance with Berkeley Chamber Performances includes music of Cage, Frith, Mellit, Whelden and Schwantner in Julia Morgan's beautiful, historic, Berkeley City Club.
