Odyssey Works's Abraham Burickson and Ayden LeRoux will be in conversation with Culture Push's Clarinda Mac Low on November 9th in Brooklyn. They will discuss the unique method of art-making for an audience of one, which Odyssey Works has been doing for more than a decade. Burickson and LeRoux will autograph their new book, Odyssey Works: Transformative Experiences for an Audience of One, after the discussion.
What is Odyssey Works? For the last 15 years, the team called Odyssey Works has been selecting one or two "participants" each year from a stack of applications, and they create an "Odyssey" for them by integrating elements into their regular life that transforms the person in some way. For example, Odyssey Works may engineer the story of a friend going missing and the participant has to look for her. Other elements are more extreme: past Odysseys have included discovering a cello concert in a field, being buried alive, and being kidnapped by people in pink onesies. The immersion is so seamless, often the participant doesn't know what is real and what is part of the Odyssey. Some Odysseys go on for months.
About the Moderator: Clarinda Mac Low is an artist and the Executive Director of Culture Push, a cross-disciplinary organization encouraging hands-on participation and strong hybrid ideas.
