Friction Quartet exists to expand the string quartet repertoire and audience for adventurous contemporary music through commissioning composers and performing in underserved schools and communities. While Friction has garnered international attention as commissioners and interpreters of new music, they are also devoted to performing masterworks of the string quartet repertoire.
Jenny Q Chai is widely renowned for her ability to illuminate musical connections throughout the centuries. Based in both Shanghai and Paris, Chai's instinctive understanding of new music is complemented by a deep grounding in core repertoire, with special affinity for Schumann, Scarlatti, Beethoven, Bach, Debussy, and Ravel.
NVCM has been presenting superb chamber music in San Francisco since 1992.
