Lynn Downey will present a lecture and slide show on the life of one of San Francisco's most famous citizens: Levi Strauss. Strauss' early years in Bavaria and New York leads off the lecture followed by his life, career, and contributions to San Francisco history, culture, and politics and how he and a Reno, Nevada tailor invented the first blue jeans.
Lynn Downey, whose family has worn Levi's jeans for over a century, was the first in-house Historian hired by Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco. For twenty-four years, until her retirement, she filled in the historical blanks left by the 1906 earthquake and fire, not only with research but with actual, historical garments, documents, and photographs. Armed with a generous budget she scoured Ebay, the closets of private collectors, the famed Rose Bowl flea market, and the occasional thrift store, to acquire what is now a 5,000+ archive of garments, including the oldest jeans known. These came from mines, barns, and trunks, hidden denim treasures that now live safely in fireproof and earthquake-proof facilities at the company's headquarters. An original letter signed by Levi Strauss was another treasure, tracked down-amazingly-in her own town of Sonoma, California.
