Z SPACE and piece by piece productions present Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca in Antigona.
Hailed by critics for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances, Noche Flamenca is one of the most authentic flamenco companies in the world today, and Soledad Barrio is its star. Antigona is adapted from Sophocles' classic play and touches on themes of catharsis, dictatorship, repression, loss, the strength of family, and female empowerment. Combining live music, song and dance, Antigona brings the fiery, expressive nature of flamenco to one of the world's great classic tragedies.
Antigona was created by Noche Flamenca Artistic Director Martin Santangelo in collaboration with Soledad Barrio, an artist celebrated by the New York Times as "one of today's great dancers and the recipient of a "Bessie" award for Outstanding Creative Achievement. Honoring the Greek tradition of sung poetry and musical accompaniment, Martin Santangelo studied the poetry of Sophocles, then translated and re-wrote the text into lyrics. The themes in the work include catharsis, issues of dictatorship, repression, loss, the strength of family, and female empowerment strong themes not only in Sophocles, but also in flamenco.
"It's a visual feast and effective theater, yes, but more rewardingly it's a powerfully visceral experience." -The New York Times
"Never, until I saw Santangelo's ensemble, their heels stamping, their arms cutting through the air, had I seen a chorus whose physical force could support the fate-heavy songs that Sophocles wrote for his plays. As for Barrio, though she spoke rarely, dancing seemed better than words: no rhetoric, no explanations, but just passion, majesty, absorption." -Joan Acocella, The New Yorker
