Sibelius Swan of Tuonela, Jason Smoller, cor anglais R. Strauss Don Juan Debussy Rhapsody, Gary Dranch, clarinet Ravel Daphnis & Chloe Suite No. 2
From the love story of Daphnis & Chloe to the escapades of Don Juan, Valentine's Day comes early this year as the GVO shares its love of music with romantic-themed orchestral showpieces featuring two of our own musicians in the solo spotlight. Reception with the musicians following the concert.
In addition to performances in many of New York's most iconic venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Jason Smoller has performed with orchestras around the United States and in China, France, and the Dominican Republic. He has performed alongside Joshua Bell, Philippe Entremont, and Itamar Zorman and under the batons of Kurt Masur, Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, and Daniel Barenboim. In January 2017, he made his New York concerto debut performing the English horn concerto by Peteris Vasks with The Chelsea Symphony.
Educator and performer Gary Dranch's performance of the Wolff Clarinet Concerto on the album The Brazilian Concerto was nominated for a 2001 Grammy Award. Composers Elliott Schwartz, Daniel Wolff, Peter Hazzard, John Bavicchi, and Douglas Anderson have written works for him. His album The Twentieth Century Clarinet Concerto was released on MSR Classics in 2006. Dranch's recital venues include the Bruno Walter Auditorium, Merkin Hall, Donnell Library, 'The Atrium' at CitiCorp Center, and Loeb Center at NYU. He has appeared as soloist with orchestras in New York, South America and Europe.
