Presented by the San Francisco Black Infant Health Program, PhotoVoice Grand is an exhibition of photos and stories reflecting the lives and views of Black mothers in San Francisco to take place on February 24th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fillmore Heritage Center, 1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA. This is a no-cost event the host requests RSVP to bihphotovoices.eventbrite.com by February 20th.
"This is a unique and timely exhibit, as we often do not hear the authentic voices of young back mothers," shares San Francisco Black Infant Health Program, Director Jenee Johnson. PhotoVoice is a process through which women can identify, represent and enhance their community through a specific photographic and storytelling technique.
Within a culturally affirming environment and honoring the unique history of African American women, the Black Infant Health Program (BIH) uses a group-based approach with complementary client-centered case management to help women develop life skills, learn strategies for reducing stress, and build social support. The BIH program focuses on helping pregnant and mothering African American women become empowered to make healthy choices for themselves, their families and their communities, and the PhotoVoice process strongly aligns with the BIH Program model.
Photovoice participants are provided with cameras to take photos that represent their perspective on life in their communities. Participants then discuss their photographs, write narratives to accompany their photos, and take action to reach community members, leaders and policy makers to promote awareness and social change.
San Francisco is the first BIH program in the state to implement its PhotoVoice project, bringing together women from their core BIH program to document and discuss their personal and shared experiences of pregnancy and motherhood. The project promotes self-efficacy, social support and racial pride among participants.
