March 16 - May 13, 2017: Tuesday - Friday 10am to 6pm Saturday 10am-5pm
Dialogues in Drawing is inspired by the struggles and victories of women artists living and working through social turbulence, contested identity politics, and dramatic political change. The exhibition is conceived of as a dynamic and relational dialogue among fifteen contemporary women artists who are actively engaged in processes of describing and re-describing the world through drawing, both as a medium in and of itself and as an essential part of other multi-media art practices.
The artists navigate a plurality of avenues of identity, drawing on their personal experiences in presenting a unique response to contemporary social conditions. With the burgeoning of broader movements oriented toward women's rights, the artists of Dialogues in Drawing illustrate a diverse range of relationships between political consciousness and a personal sense of self, coalescing together in an exciting conversation regarding the placement of self within a wider, international context. The exhibition celebrates the successes of their endeavors, pointing towards the victories yet to be won in the midst of the current turmoil of the socio-political landscape.
Curated by Natasha Becker, the exhibition features artists Damali Abrams, ruby onyinyechi amanze, Amy Cutler, Donna Dennis, Torkwase Dyson, Anna Sigmond Gudmundsdottir, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Rosemary Mayer (1943-2014), Alison Saar, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Ebony G. Patterson, Adrian Piper, Simone Shubuck, Shinique Smith, Saya Woolfalk, and Sam Vernon. Dialogues in Drawing is on view from March 16 - May 13, 2017.
