Our March program features the world premiere of Songs of Isaiah, composed by BCG Artistic Director Sanford Dole, and the second in BCG's year-long series of commissioned works. The three movement work sets texts from the Biblical book of Isaiah - "Surely it is God who saves me", "Seek the Lord while he wills to be found", and "Arise, shine, for your light has come". A string orchestra and a harp provide accompaniment for this upbeat composition.
We will also perform works by two Baroque masters and exciting new music from two English composers. Representing the Baroque are J. S. Bach's sublime a cappella Motet #1, "Singet den Herrn", and Giovanni Pergolesi's joyous "Magnificat", also with the string orchestra.
We will also perform Paul Mealor's lovely "Stabat Mater", a meditation on the death of Jesus. And we finish the concert with "Ave Maris Stella" by award-winning Cecilia McDowall, also based in London.
Our harpist for this concert is Bay Area resident Jessica Schaeffer. Highly versatile, Jessica performs locally and across the country with a musical range from classical and jazz to Celtic, American standards and spirituals. Jessica also maintains a studio, teaching private harp lessons to students of all ages.
Tickets for all concerts are available, online or at the door of each concert location. There will be a preview lecture 30 minutes before the start of each concert.
