"The Soldier's Journey" is an afternoon of Music and Poetry that explores a variety of perspectives on war, peace and the soldiers' experiences before, during and after battle.
"The Soldier's Journey" is the West Coast Celebration for the Heroes' Voices "National Veteran's Poetry Contest".
An exciting cast of professional actors, singers (and veterans) will perform. The poetry will range from "The Iliad" to contemporary Slam Poetry, and the traditional, folk and popular music is inspired by the stories of soldiers and members of their families.
The performance includes a World Premiere of a work commissioned for "The Soldier's Journey". The piece is by San Francisco composer Michael Conley based on a text from Lord Alfred Tennyson's poem "Ulysses".
This event is the culmination of Heroes' Voices' first annual "National Veterans Poetry Contest".
Advisors and Judges for the project include legendary San Francisco poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and English poet David White. They have selected some of their own poetry to be featured in the performance. Also featured will be the winning poems from the "National Veterans Poetry Contest".
This event is in cooperation with FRIENDS of the San Francisco Library, and will be performed again at the Hylton Performing Arts Center at George Mason University in Virginia.
There are a limited number of free vouchers available for veterans. Patrons can also support the project by purchasing a VIP Veteran's ticket for $40.
