The Firehouse Arts Center Theater in Pleasanton welcomes back The Swingin' Blue Stars of the USS Hornet for their big Annual Memorial Day Weekend Salute to the USO. This year the talented crew brings a fresh, new show to the stage, with spotlight on special guest performers.
Musical theatre star Tielle Baker, award-winning acapella quartet HouseBlend, swing dancers Chris & Gwen, and the Big Band Sound of The Fabulous Fazio Five complete the cast for this year's celebration of songs and music from the 40's and 50's.
The high-energy production is full of musical numbers in the style of The Andrews Sisters, along with fun-filled skits, dance numbers, and much more. The format is a loving homage to the star-studded USO productions of yesteryear, and a salute to veterans of all generations.
The Swingin' Blue Stars of the USS Hornet is a group of talented women who originally began singing together to relieve the stress of having loved ones in a combat theater. They continue performing today to show appreciation for veterans of all wars, while increasing support for troops currently serving in harm's way.
Originally calling themselves The Singing Blue Star Moms, the group was founded in 2002 by members of the East Bay Blue Star Moms who had sons and daughters serving in the military. Within a few years, their high-spirited WWII style swing repertoire gained a solid following throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
On New Year's Eve 2006, the group was the opening act for the re-established Glenn Miller Orchestra before an audience of 1,400 big-band enthusiasts and swing dancers on the USS Hornet. Then in May of 2007, the group officially added "of the USS Hornet" to their name, and cemented their relationship with the famous WWII aircraft carrier-turned-museum in Alameda.
