OnenessButoh is honored to be a participant in this year's 20th Annual United States of Asian American Festival, performing Randomness of Nothingness, an evocative showcase of new solo, duet and ensemble works.
Conceived and choreographed by seasoned Butoh performing artist Judith Kajiwara, Randomness is a visually-stunning 90-minute Butoh performance consisting of two Programs:
Program 1 - 3 Women: Three solo performances will be showcased: 1) Released!, by Nina Moore (formerly of Blanche Brown's Roots of Haiti), with taiko by Ruth Ichinaga and Kiyono Kishi 2) Cellar, by Judith Kajiwara, with soundscape by Kallan Nishimoto and 3) The Chair, by Ruth Ichinaga, with music by Bay Area composer Shinji Eshima. These powerful stories speak of enslavement, grief, loss, abuse, fear and, ultimately, forgiveness. Each is deeply personal, reflecting compelling life influences that have carved the legacies of who these 3 women have become today.
Program 2 - Randomness of Nothingness: Strung together as a series of 9 dream-like vignettes, Randomness offers a surreal look at ways we hide our true selves to complacently fit into the expectations of society. While unknowingly being manipulated and controlled in all facets of our lives, under the pretext of "freedom" and human evolution, our willful blindness continues. As life shifts more and more toward the absurd and insane, unless we wake up, we'll continue to be enslaved as our connection to the essence of who we are and why we're here erodes. Sadly, functioning as apathetic, unemotional, and robotic has become everyday reality. Survival of the fittest in a fear-based, hostile world has separated, divided and alienated us not only from ourselves but from each other. Ultimately, we must find the resilience to evolve within before a renewed higher consciousness evokes the potential for change both personal and global.
