San Francisco-based choreographer Raisa Punkki and her Finnish film director sister, Pauliina Punkki bring the third installment of a ten-year project, "Roadmap 2015-2025" to the San Francisco International Arts Festival this June with nods to Virginia Woolf and Gloria Steinem, A Room (Of Our Own) is a live performance where movement, film and art collaborate on what it means to be female, and will feature 4 dancers along with a cinematic manifestation "Hahmo" who insinuates itself into the narrative to observe and interact.
"Hahmo" is a Finnish word that means character, figure or shape," say Raisa and Paulina. "In this case it is something of an apparition. It does not have gender, race, specific age or anything else that distinguishes one human from another. It is anything and nothing at the same time. It will both observe and interact with the live performers."
A Room (Of Our Own) is an investigation into what it means to be a woman based on memories, pictures, ideas and molds that we either are trying to fit or escape. "The idea that women are mysteries is a myth," say the sisters. "It's more a matter of not being listened to or heard. "Matka" is the Finnish word for journey, and this is a documentation of the feminine, how society regards it, and what happens as we pass through the seasons of our lives."
NOTE: The San Francisco performance of a Room of Our Own has now been added to the official list of Finland's centennial festivities that celebrates its 100 years of independence in 2017.
Expanding on the cinematic tone established by the inclusion of Hahmo, will be the sound design, which Punkki describes as "atmospheric and ambient, as you would find with a the score in a David Lynch film."
Performers are: Raisa Punkki, Miyun Lee, Meegan Hertensteiner, and Fanni Miettinen, who is Raisa Punkki's 9-year old daughter.
