Barefoot Chamber Concerts ("an enterprise noted for both its quality and informality" - San Francisco Classical Voice) presents really good music in the right acoustic and without the formality of most classical music events.
Our June 9 concert features Bay Area icons Shira Kammen (vielle, medieval harp, voice) Letitia Berlin (recorder, doucaine, voice), Phoebe Jevtovic Rosquist (voice, bells), and Paul Thompson (voice), performing music from the 14th century Roman de Fauvel.
The Roman de Fauvel is a satirical French poem comprised of fascinating and immensely varied monophonic and polyphonic music and texts. Written in Paris in 1314, the piece is an allegorical tale of a heinous horse who rises to prominence in the French royal court, and through lyrics and music expresses the self-serving hypocrisy of men, and the excesses of those in power. The poem, though banned at the time for being seditious and heretical, was wildly successful and still copied into the 15th century. The compositions range from gorgeous love songs to edgy polyphony of the Ars Nova.
All in the fabulous wooden acoustic of St. Mark's Parish Hall. There will, of course, be snax.
