Mystery-thriller author Barry Lancet always tries to up his game for each new book, so when sitting down to write THE SPY ACROSS THE TABLE some 18 months ago he asked himself, what keeps him up at night? As an expat American living in Tokyo, he didn't have to look far-he just thought about one of his neighbors: North Korea. The feisty dictator to the west was ratcheting up his nuclear ambitions, and as if that weren't enough, China had begun stretching its military might in the South China Sea.
Lancet's once safe perch in Tokyo was within striking range of North Korean missiles and he no longer felt so secure. And then there was talk of China's secret, multigenerational plan for world domination. Add to that the plight of the North Korean defectors (and citizens), the fact that each country was at the other's throat, plus a very real danger involving a weak link in America's national security, and he had plenty of seasoning for his latest international thriller.
