An anniversary is a time to celebrate memories of wonderful moments and events. So it only makes sense to start Santa Cecilia Orchestra’s 25th anniversary season with a dazzling collection of musical remembrances of things past, cherished and beloved. Rio Sena is Astor Piazzolla’s homage to the River Seine, a remembrance of his time in Paris. Simple Symphony is dedicated to Britten’s childhood viola teacher. The piece is based on eight themes that Britten wrote during his childhood and for which he had a particular fondness. The concert comes to a thrilling close with Tchaikovsky’s exhilarating Souvenir de Florence, his musical postcard from an Italian summer holiday, filled with gorgeous melodies and bursting energy.
