Info:
In an intensive five-day exploration, PIVOT celebrates creator-performers on the American artistic edge. Bay Area pianist and contemporary music specialist Sarah Cahill will lead a celebration of visionary California composer Lou Harrison's 100th birthday, partnering with the Alexander String Quartet and William Winant Percussion Group, who will perform on instruments built by Harrison himself.
Sarah Cahill, recently called "a sterling pianist and an intrepid illuminator of the classical avant-garde" by the New York Times and "a brilliant and charismatic advocate for modern and contemporary composers" by Time Out New York, has commissioned, premiered, and recorded numerous compositions for solo piano. She enjoys working closely with composers, musicologists, and scholars to prepare scores for performance.
Having celebrated it 30th Anniversary in 2011, the Alexander String Quartet has performed in the major music capitals of five continents, securing its standing among the world's premiere ensembles. Widely admired for its interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart, and Shostakovich, the quartet's recordings of the Beethoven cycle (twice), and the Bartok and Shostakovich cycles have all won international critical acclaim. The quartet has also established itself as an important advocate of new music through over 25 commissions.
William Winnant is principal percussionist with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, he has been closely associated with NYC composer John Zorn, and has made numerous recordings, and performed in many projects throughout the world with the composer. Starting in 1995 he has been the percussionist with the avant-rock band Mr. Bungle, has made two recordings (Disco Volante and California on Warner Brothers), and has toured throughout the world with this group. For many years he had worked with composer Lou Harrison, recording and premiering many of his works.
