Two Beloved Masterpieces on one program presented by Winchester Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Michael DiGiacinto Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1, Tamami Honma, acclaimed soloist
Beethoven: Beethoven spoke of his 7th symphony fondly as "one of my best works." Most will wholeheartedly agree that those words still stand today. Beethoven himself conducted the premiere of his monumental work in Vienna, December, 1813, at a charity concert for wounded soldiers. He praised the soldiers saying "We are moved by nothing but pure patriotism and the joyful sacrifice of our powers for those who have sacrificed so much for us." Adapted from Wikipedia
Tchaikovsky: 127 years ago, Tchaikovsky made his only visit to the United States. He was the guest of honor and conducted his music at the grand opening inaugural festival concerts of Carnegie Hall in New York. The concert was an instant hit. All, audience, orchestra, and soloist, seemed to recognize that they were in the presence of genius. The reception to his visit, his conducting, and his music was rapturous. Tchaikovsky discovered - much to his astonishment and as he wrote to his brother - "It turns out that in America I am far better known than in Europe. Here I'm an important bird!" Piano soloist, Tamami Honma won the Best New Music Performance in San Francisco Classical Voice's Best of the Bay 2016-17 music pollthe most recent of many awards. As the The New York Times raved: she gives "An eloquent, powerful performance."
