April 6, 7:30 pm Program 1 - In Search of American Music Follow Henry Cowell in his search for the American voice, from eighteenth-century American choral works to the American luminaries he promoted. Pianist Sarah Cahill performs and a cappella group Volti returns after their "transcendent" performance at Bard Music West's inaugural festival.
April 7 3 pm, Conversation with Joel Sachs Joel Sachs - pianist, Juilliard professor, and author of the widely-acclaimed Henry Cowell biography - will share stories from Cowell's adventurous life.
4 pm, Program 2 - Living in the Whole World of Music Discover the inspiration that Cowell drew from non-Western music, how his work opened the door for his students Lou Harrison and John Cage, and how that widening of possibilities is reflected today in contemporary musical masterworks that weave across cultures. Hear tombak virtuoso Shahab Paranj and New York-based superstar ensemble Third Sound.
7:30pm Preconcert interview
8pm, Program 3 - Henry Cowell: Inventor Revel in the sonorities of Henry Cowell's wild musical inventions and discover this year's commissioning project: an experimental collaboration between composer Eugene Birman and choreographer and San Francisco Ballet soloist, James Sofranko. This premiere is sure to be unforgettable. The award-winning Telegraph Quartet ends the program with Cowell's moving United Quartet.
